About Austin Bats

At first thought, the idea of watching 1.5 million bats take flight at dusk may be intimidating, but our staff assures you, that it is in fact majestic. The newest Congress Avenue Bridge in Downtown Austin, TX was constructed in 1980 over the Colorado River and is now the home to the world’s largest urban Mexican Free-tailed bat colony. An Austin tradition, people from all over the city join together near the bridge each spring evening to watch the colony take flight. A guest interested in this tour can choose to bike over, kayak under, or walk to the bridge on either a guided or unguided tour.
