Let's set back the clock with a facial rejuvenation surgery to improve your most visible signs of aging by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles, and re-draping the skin of your face and neck. A facelift at Snyder Plastic Surgery at The Breast and Body Center can help you look younger and more energetic in your facial appearance. Austin, TX board-certified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Dr. Ned Snyder IV can customize the facelift procedure according to your individual bone structure and skin elasticity.
Facelift surgery is designed to rejuvenate your face, combating the effects of time, stress, sun exposure, and environmental damage. By removing fat and tightening facial muscles, facelift surgery allows the skin to be smoothed and stretched more tautly. A facelift can diminish wrinkles, lessen folds, and remove hanging skin from the jowls. Some patients choose to combine facelift with other facial procedures in order to achieve more dramatic results. A facelift, or rhytidectomy, can’t stop the aging process. What it can do is "set back the clock,” and can be done alone or in conjunction with other procedures such as a forehead lift, eyelid surgery, or nose reshaping to achieve more dramatic results. The MACS Lift was first developed in Belgium, where Dr. Ned Snyder IV trained with Patrick L. Tonnard, M.D. and Alexis M. Verpaele, M.D., the inventors of the MACS Lift procedure and authors of the book The MACS-Lift: Short-Scar Rhytidectomy. The MACS Lift (minimal access cranial suspension lift) is less invasive than a conventional facelift, takes about 3 hours to complete, and it has a recovery period than can be as short as 14 days. There is less visible scarring than a conventional facelift, as well. The procedure is particularly suited to individuals with a sagging in their mid face who would like it refreshed with a subtle tightening of the skin. The limited incision to the skin is in the hairline junction just above and in front of the ear with a very short extension behind the ear. The area of undermining — unlike a conventional facelift — is much smaller and only involves a portion of the cheek, which means there is far less risk of skin damage. Dissolvable internal stitches are used to reposition the deep layers of the face in a more youthful position. Due to the less invasive nature of the MACS Lift, recovery time is normally 14 days and there are less associated risks of surgery compared to a conventional facelift. The positive effects of a MACS Lift lasts for about 10 years. This is dependent upon the elasticity of the skin and other considerations such as diet, UV exposure, and smoking.
Also called as a short-scar facelift because of the shorter incisions made, a mini facelift is a treatment that corrects the middle and lower face. Many patients initially consider this technique, but this doesn’t correct any severe issues and usually renders short-term results. Patients, who undergo this procedure, are most likely to also want a full facelift as a next step to fully rejuvenate and reshape the face to its youthful curves.
"I had an amazing experience with beautiful results - I couldn’t be happier with my breast augmentation results. Everyone that I met from my first consultation to my post follow up after surgery were extremely helpful and informative. Dr. Snyder himself is an amazing surgeon. My results are perfect and better than I ever could have imagined. I highly recommend him if you are thinking about this procedure. His PA, Jen was extremely helpful and informative as well. The facilities from Dr. Snyder’s office to the surgical site used were clean, beautiful and comfortable. I felt well taken care the entire time and am thrilled with my results."- Anonymous / Vitals / Mar 08, 2018

"I worked with Dr. Snyder & his team for a breast reduction surgery. This was something I had only dreamed about. I felt like it was so out of reach and intimidating. However, I mustered up the courage to at least look into things. I was sure I would get scared or confused and give up ...That wasn’t the case, though. Dr. Snyder, Jen & the Breast & Body Center of Austin team guided me through everything step by step, explaining plans in terms I could understand, giving me real...istic hopes and encouraging me to take the best care of myself with honest feedback and suggestions. I can say “thank you” a million different ways but I think the best way to convey my gratitude is by sharing my new experiences. Experiences I never thought I was worthy of... Something as simple as sitting at my desk, without pain. Enjoying play time with my children without an aching back. Getting dressed without having an anxiety attack bc my body just didn’t reflect the person I thought I was. My oversized breast hindered my physical appearance, my mental health and my overall quality of life. Dr. Snyder and his team beautifully crafted my breast into something fitting for my body type. As a friend put it “You look like you were always meant to look”. I am beyond happy with my results, recovery and care. Thank you for changing my life."- K.T. / Facebook / Dec 16, 2019

Your facelift may be performed in a hospital, free-standing ambulatory facility, or office-based surgical suite. Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. During your treatment planning, we can decide in advance what type of anesthesia will be used, either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. For your safety during the operation, various monitors are used to check your heart, blood pressure, pulse and the amount of oxygen circulation in your blood. The technique used during a facelift is dependent on the patient’s facial features and conditions. Dr. Snyder will always aim for the less invasive technique, but some patient cases are severe and will require internal tissues, fat, and skin to be manipulated.
When your surgery is completed, you will be taken to a recovery area where you will continue to be closely monitored. A bandage is typically wrapped around your face, which is removed in the office the next day. In most cases, small tubes are placed beneath the skin to drain away fluid that might otherwise accumulate. These drains stay in place for 1 – 2 days. You probably will be permitted to go home after a few hours, although some patients may stay overnight in the hospital or surgical facility for monitoring.
Even though this is considered an outpatient procedure, there are some cases where the patient stays overnight for monitoring. It is normal to experience bruising and swelling after the surgery, and patients will feel as if their face is being pulled tight. This subsides within a couple of weeks. Recovery time varies greatly among patients. After surgery, you will be asked to restrict your activities and relax for a few days. Elevating your head when you sleep will help to minimize swelling and bruising. Remember, you must not take aspirin or certain anti-inflammatory medications, and you should not smoke or be exposed to secondary smoke.
Any bandages and drain tubes will usually be removed in 1 – 2 days. At that time, you will notice puffiness and discoloration, which may be more pronounced in some portions of your face than others. Do not be alarmed by any unevenness or temporary asymmetry caused by this variance in swelling and bruising, which is normal. Generally, the greatest amount of swelling occurs 24 – 48 hours after surgery, but it may take several weeks before all your puffiness is resolved. Most bruising will disappear within 2 weeks. After a few days, you will be permitted to wear makeup, which will help conceal any discoloration. You will also experience some numbness, which may be present for several weeks or longer. Stitches in front of the ears and alternate stitches in the hairline are removed at 5 days. The remaining sutures in the hairline are removed 7 days after surgery.
Straining, bending, and lifting should be avoided during the early post-operative period. In many instances, you will be able to resume most of your normal activities within 2 weeks and begin to exercise 3 – 4 weeks after surgery. You will be instructed to temporarily avoid exposure to direct sunlight, and be diligent about the use of a sunscreen to protect your skin.

How Will I Be Evaluated?
In evaluating you for facelift surgery, Dr. Snyder will assess the thickness, texture, and elasticity of your skin, and note the severity of your wrinkles and folds. Your hairline will be examined to determine where incisions can be discreetly placed. All of these factors, as well as your bone structure and underlying tissues, will be considered in developing an individual surgical plan. Our team at Snyder Plastic Surgery at The Breast and Body Center may discuss additional procedures that can be performed along with a facelift in order to address all the concerns you have identified. For example, a facelift is frequently combined with a brow lift, eyelid surgery, nose reshaping, or skin treatments such as a chemical peel, dermabrasion, or laser skin resurfacing.
How Can I Prepare for a lift?
If you are a smoker, you will be asked to stop smoking well in advance of surgery. Aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs can cause increased bleeding, so you should avoid taking these medications for a period of time. Dr. Snyder will advise you and provide additional pre-operative instructions. If your hair is very short, you may want to let it grow enough to cover your incisions while they heal. If you are overweight and you have a realistic desire to lose more than 15 pounds, you should discuss this with your team as well. If your facelift will be performed on an outpatient basis, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home and to stay with you at least the first night following surgery.
Are there Noninvasive options?
Cosmetic surgery is constantly evolving and always finding ways to minimize the invasiveness of procedures. There are countless options that are considered less invasive than a facelift, including wrinkle relaxers such as BOTOX®, injectable fillers, microdermabrasion and chemical/laser peels. These alternatives aim to correct signs of aging such as wrinkles, as well flatten and soften folds and contours. The effects, while effective, are often short-term lasting about 6 months to a year. Although these procedures can be safely repeated, for some, a facelift may be a better option.
How will I look & feel?
The results of your facelift may be dramatic or subtle, depending on how you looked before surgery as well as the specific goals that were established. Since the healing process is gradual, you should expect to wait at least several weeks for an accurate picture of your "new look." Additional minor changes, or settling, may occur over several months. It is important to realize that the amount of time it takes for recovery varies greatly among individuals. After surgery, you will be asked to restrict your activities and simply relax for a few days. Elevating your head when you sleep will help to minimize swelling and bruising. Remember, you must not take aspirin or certain anti-inflammatory medications, and you should not smoke or be exposed to heavy secondary smoke for a while.
How Will My Face Change?
Through the discreet facelift incisions, Dr. Snyder will able to free the skin from the underlying tissues to the extent necessary for the particular surgical technique selected. After the skin is pulled up and back, the excess skin will be removed. In some instances, the deeper tissues may also need to be repositioned in order to restore a more youthful contour to your face. If necessary, a small incision beneath the chin permits the removal of fatty tissue in that area and smoothing of the cord-like structures of the underlying muscle in the neck.
Dr. Snyder will perform your facelift so that the scars will be well concealed within the hairline and natural creases on your face. With the lesser invasive techniques, the scars heal pretty well and will almost be completely invisible to the naked eye.
The best candidate for a facelift is a man or woman whose face and neck have begun to sag, but whose skin still has some elasticity and whose bone structure is strong and well-defined. Most patients are 40 – 60 years of age, but facelifts can be done successfully on people 70 – 80 years of age as well. A facelift can make you look younger and fresher, and it may enhance your self-confidence in the process. It cannot, however, give you a totally different look, nor can it restore the health and vitality of your youth. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them us.
Any one or combination of the following conditions may indicate that you are a good candidate for a facelift:
- A deep line, or fold, running from the corner of your nose to the corner of your mouth
- Jowls, or loss of a well-defined jaw line associated with youthfulness
- Deep wrinkles in the cheeks and sagging of the "highlight" areas of the cheekbones
- Loose skin, wrinkles, vertical "cords," or excess fatty tissue in the neck
A facelift can improve all of these problems. It cannot, however, correct conditions such as sagging eyebrows, excess skin and fatty deposits in the upper and lower eyelids, or wrinkles around the mouth. Dr. Snyder can provide further information if you have an interest in other procedures to treat these areas. Patients must also understand the procedure in detail, including the level of invasiveness, placement of incisions, what layers of tissues will be corrected, and what risks may be associated with the surgery before moving forward.
