Ned Snyder IV has provided consultations to numerous women considering cosmetic surgery for breast reduction. This procedure transcends mere aesthetics; women seeking breast reduction typically aim to alleviate issues such as back and shoulder pain caused by the weight of their breasts, as well as skin irritation.
What is Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction or reduction mammoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that addresses overly large breasts to relieve physical and emotional discomfort, and improve the proportions of the upper body. Some women struggle for many years (even from puberty) with this weight on their chests and have tried to lose weight to decrease the size of their breasts. Unfortunately, exercise is often not enough since the breasts are primarily composed of glandular tissue, not excess fat. During the breast reduction procedure, Dr. Snyder will reduce the size of the breasts according to your unique physique and desired goals. The goal is to create symmetrical, proportionate breasts that relieve painful symptoms and help women feel more comfortable and confident in their appearance.

Why Choose Breast Reduction?
Some women struggle for years with the physical and emotional effects of overly large breasts, even beginning in adolescence. Beyond cosmetic concerns, enlarged breasts can cause discomfort, limit physical activity, and affect self-confidence. Breast reduction surgery provides a way to restore balance, reduce discomfort, and improve overall quality of life.
Good Candidates for Breast Reduction
Good candidates for breast reduction surgery are in overall good health and have realistic expectations for the procedure. Good candidates for this cosmetic breast surgery may:
- Have chronic back, shoulder, and neck pain caused by large breasts
- Seek relief from skin irritation or rashes that commonly occur beneath the breast folds
- Want to improve the proportions of their body and boost confidence
Before surgery, patients will meet with Dr. Snyder for a private consultation to review health history, discuss goals, and confirm whether breast reduction is the right choice for them.

Choosing breast reduction is a personal decision that can bring both physical relief and renewed confidence. At Snyder Plastic Surgery, Dr. Snyder and his team are committed to guiding patients through the process with compassion and expertise. From your first consultation through recovery, you’ll receive personalized care designed to ensure comfort, safety, and natural-looking results. Below is an overview of what to expect before, during, and after breast reduction surgery.
What to Expect: Step-by-Step
During a breast reduction consultation, patients discuss their concerns regarding the size and weight of their breasts, as well as any physical discomfort or emotional issues they may be experiencing. Dr. Snyder evaluates breast size, shape, symmetry, and the patient’s overall health and medical history to determine candidacy for the procedure. Patients are informed about the surgical techniques involved, potential risks and complications, and expected outcomes.
On the day of the surgery, the chosen surgical technique, which may involve liposuction, excision, or a combination of both, is carefully executed to achieve the desired reduction in breast size and improve breast shape and symmetry. Excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed, and the remaining breast tissue is reshaped and lifted to create a more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing appearance. This is an outpatient procedure, meaning patients can return home immediately after.
We recommend using a surgical bra or compression bra to protect the breasts for the first several weeks. Patients may return to work within 7 – 10 days and resume physical activities (such as exercise) between 3 – 4 weeks post-operatively. While breast reduction results are immediately noticeable, initial swelling may hinder them. All sutures used are dissolvable or underneath the skin.
Breast Reduction Incisions
Typically, a breast reduction requires a circular incision around the areola and a vertical incision that goes from the bottom of the areola to the fold underneath the breast. The vertical incision and surrounding skin underneath the breast will appear “bunched” right after surgery, but will smooth out over time.
The incisions will be covered with surgical glue. This glue stays on the incisions for 1 – 3 weeks and eventually comes off on its own. Small pieces of gauze and tape may also be placed over the incisions, which may be removed 1 – 2 days after surgery. The incision sites should remain covered if they continue to drain fluid.
