Filler Migration and Bad Outcomes

We get it, filler can be scary! Some are permanent, sometimes it’s too much, sometimes it’s not enough, I don’t want to look like a duck, or not myself…we have heard it all! And if you think you’re alone, don’t worry, because you are certainly not alone! We get it, it can be confusing trying to navigate your way through all of the available injectables out there and deciding what’s best for you! We’re here to help, and hopefully we can clear up some of the confusion you might have!

While there are several types of injectables on the market, ranging from neurotoxins (i.e., Botox® , Dysport and Xoemin) to fillers, and even injectables that dissolve fat, we’re going to focus on fillers. There was a time, and maybe it’s still around some, where it seemed like every woman in Hollywood or on social media looked like a duck. You know what we’re talking about, those big, sometimes HUGE lips! The lumpy faces, the bulging under the skin, or little marbles you could feel. Bad filler happens. A LOT. And unfortunately, it’s given filler a bad rap because of it. Nothing in plastic surgery, or even in aesthetics and the entire beauty industry for that matter, has a one size fits all approach, and the same goes for filler. There are many different types of filler, each with slightly different components, that each work their magic better in certain areas, or in different skin types.

So what is filler migration and how do these bad outcomes happen? Well for starters, filler migration is what happens when the product that is injected moves to another area, i.e. an area it’s not supposed to be in. While this is extremely rare, it can happen, so it’s important that you choose a qualified injector. Often times, great filler outcomes are so great, that nobody even knows it’s there, because it’s meant to enhance and define, not look overdone or purposeful. Because of that, it’s also more common for someone to share their filler horror story, than to voluntarily give up their beauty secrets, which is why you hear less of the good, and often hear more of the bad.

It's important to start with the basics: make sure you are going to a reputable source. Like everything else, there is a black market for filler and more and more people are getting burned by too-good-to-be-true deals, and getting injected with expired, tainted, or even fake products. These often leave behind irreparable damage, and can lead to serious medical complications. When in doubt, you can always check the filler manufacturers website for certified providers in your area, and make sure the office you are going to is overseen by a board certified plastic surgeon. Filler can be such a great choice in the right patient, and help bridge the gap before someone is ready for surgery, and restore some the volume we naturally lose as we age.
