The nose is a dominant feature of the face and has an important role in determining overall appearance. Modern nasal surgery techniques by our board-certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Ned Snyder IV focus on reshaping undesirable features of the nose to compliment features that are attractive. The Breast and Body Center of Austin provides these procedures for their natural-looking results and functional improvements. Many patients have both cosmetic and functional concerns about their nose (such as a severely deviated septum causing a blocked nasal airway and a visibly crooked nose). Dr. Snyder can surgically open the nasal airways so that it is easier to breathe. Impairment of nasal breathing is considered a health problem and may be covered by health insurance. In a consultation with Dr. Snyder at the Breast and Body Center of Austin, we will review your cosmetic and functional concerns to help you determine your best options. Age Requirements for Surgery
A patient can have rhinoplasty after their nose has fully matured, which is around age 16 for women and age 18 for men. Parental consent is required for patients who are younger than 18 years of age to have rhinoplasty surgery. Good health and maturity are the most important considerations in determining the maximum advisable age for rhinoplasty.
"I couldn't be more satisfied with Dr. Snyder and his staff! I first was introduced to the practice while going through chemotherapy and pregnant with our youngest son. Now almost a year later I finally had my DIEP Flap reconstruction last week. It's been a long journey but they are absolutely the best!!! I would recommend a million times. Thank you so much everyone at Breast and Body Center. You guys have made this whole process so worth it!! I'm in love with my new body."- R.W. / Facebook / Sep 18, 2017
"So where do I begin...Dr. Snyder is the plastic surgeon we all dream about. He is a dream personified into reality. Why you ask? Well...everything about that office is kismet. The front office staff are friendly. There are tons of free dermatology samples and sunscreen as his wife Réneé is a well-respected & reputable Dermatologist. His assistant Laurene Avis is very knowledgeable about all products, services, & surgical techniques. Veronica Alvarez handles billing and scheduling with finesse & ease. Then in walks this silver_haired tall cowboy. That's right y'all Blue suit and boots. Apparently, those boots were made for walking into operating rooms and crafting art. Yes...ART...I feel like a masterpiece after my surgery. I had two babies & my son left me with a hernia that needed repair amongst other signs of a struggle. Motherhood is beautiful...but can be hard when a size 0 girls carries an 8lb bouncing baby boy. Since my operation, I've had no complications. Scars are barely visible. I recommend squeezing vitamin-E capsules on the scar once he gives you the green light.I modeled some in my 20s. This was in the land of flat abs & thigh gaps. Lol! Now I'm mid 30s & I've been asked to promote & model for THREE different agencies! This all after being told I had aged out of modeling at 26. I've started a small business called Pepper Rose Retro...vintage pin-up clothing & accessories. He is a hidden jewel...trained in Europe & specializes in cosmetics and oncology procedures.Remember, I'm a Wake Forest trained PA...I would & will only go to the best. Special thanks Dr. Snyder and his team!"- T.O. / Yelp / Sep 17, 2017

There are several techniques used for rhinoplasty. The approach taken will be based on the complexity of the surgical case and the overall goal of the patient. Most types of rhinoplasty surgery are performed endonasally (all the incisions are inside the nose). Some patients may have an “open” approach if they require extensive nasal tip work or are having a repeat rhinoplasty. This results in a small, discreet scar under the nose. Rhinoplasty surgery will last from 1 – 2 hours depending on the degree of shaping required. If the rhinoplasty is also intended to improve your breathing, additional time is required.
Local anesthesia combined with light sedation is used for some individuals. Most patients will have local anesthesia in addition to general anesthesia administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. Be sure to discuss your options and preferences completely with Dr. Snyder.
With an open rhinoplasty, the incisions are made on the tissue between the nostrils or on the natural crease of the nose just above the lips. This allows for greater access and view of the confines of the nose. Dr. Snyder prefers this as it is easier to manipulate the bones and cartilage. The skin is peeled back to reveal the internal structure of the nose and re-draped once reshaping is completed. The scars associated with this approach are tiny (less than 5mm) so they are not easily noticeable once fully healed.
During a closed rhinoplasty surgery, incisions are made to the inside of the nose through the nostrils. This is a common technique for patients who desire mild reshaping. This approach does not cause visible scarring. For severe reshaping cases, the open technique will be implemented.
For minor reshaping, some patients may opt to try an injectable filler to achieve results. These come in a variety of liquid substances, and sometimes a fat transfer can also be utilized. A filler can help add volume to hide small deformities, such as a bump or a bony appearance. It is important to note that fillers can only do so much in the reshaping process. For most patients, surgery is a better option and will offer a permanent solution.
Rhinoplasty is performed in an accredited surgical facility under general anesthesia. The procedure lasts up to 2 hours and is considered outpatient. After surgery, there will be swelling and soreness around the nose area. Bruising is also a side effect of surgery. The nose will be placed in a splint for additional support. During the first 7-10 days following surgery, the side effects will begin to disappear and the splint will be removed. Patients will be able to see their results immediately; however, it may take several months for the full results to appear.
Generally, bruising around the eyes and cheeks is most apparent during the first three days following surgery. Most discoloration will disappear within a week. A few days after surgery, you can begin to use cover-up makeup, if desired. Noticeable swelling may last for several weeks. Minor residual swelling, most frequently affecting the nasal tip, may continue for many months, but generally, this should not be apparent to others. If packing was used, it will be removed 1 – 3 days after surgery. Patients who have an external incision will have their sutures removed within a week. The nasal splint is usually worn for a week, during which time you should avoid getting it wet.
Following rhinoplasty, most people return to normal activities within a few days, but some swelling and bruising may remain. During the first week you may have a cast or splint on your nose; if you are not self-conscious about the cast you can resume most normal activities after 3 days. Most of the swelling will be gone within 3 weeks. You need to exercise good judgment for the first few weeks. Do not participate in strenuous activities that will increase your blood pressure and nasal swelling. Vigorous activity in the post-operative period may prolong recovery. Resolution of swelling may take more than one year.
Also, if the bones of your nose were altered, it may be a number of weeks before you can wear glasses without special support tape.

Is It Risky?
All surgical procedures carry some form of risk. These risks can be greatly minimized if an experienced nose surgeon is chosen to perform the surgery. While rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed procedures in the U.S., your surgeon's skill is critical so that a beautiful, satisfactory outcome can result Rhinoplasty procedures are considered safe and hundreds of thousands of rhinoplasty surgeries are performed every year. Examples of complications associated with rhinoplasty include adverse reaction to anesthesia, bleeding, or infection. Dr. Snyder will review risks in detail prior to the procedure.
Around half of all rhinoplasty cases will include some form of nose breaking in order to allow the surgeon to reshape the cartilage and bone. This is primarily intended for patients who have nasal asymmetry. The broken bone or cartilage will be reshaped and reattached, and then supported by splints during recovery.
Nasal packing is done to help with bleeding, especially if the surgery involves the septum. Gauze or cotton packs are inserted into the nasal chamber during this process. Patients find it uncomfortable, but the packing is only in for a short-term during the immediate recovery phase.
What if I don't like my nose?
You will need to wait for the swelling to subside before you can judge your final result. Patience is important. Often the subtleties and elegance are not revealed for many months. If after several months you are still unhappy with the result, speak to Dr. Snyder about your options for minor revisions.
Does rhinoplasty hurt?
While the perception of pain is subjective, most rhinoplasty patients of Breast and Body Center of Austin would say that the surgery was not very painful; they might describe it as uncomfortable. The few patients who require nasal packing (placed into the nose after the operation to control bleeding) do find this bothersome. If your rhinoplasty requires nasal packing, you will most likely be able to remove it within 48 hours.
What About Ethnic Noses?
Many ethnic noses have skin, bone, and cartilage qualities that limit the possible surgical outcomes. Often the best results are achieved with subtle improvements that do not completely erase the nose’s ethnic qualities.
Is rhinoplasty permanent?
Rhinoplasty is permanent, but after rhinoplasty your nose will still change with the natural aging process.
